Sun Temple Mahoba: Unsurpassed Architecture

   Surya temple is situated in the west of the Rahila Sagar, the beautiful decoration of architecture. This Sun Temple, located in Mahoba district of Uttar Pradesh, has kept the fame of the country abroad for its beauty.

   This divine-magnificent temple was built in the 9th century by Chandel ruler descendants. This Sun Temple of the Rahila Sagar is believed to be one of the most beautiful temples of the world.  

   Chandel ruler Raja Rahil Dev Burman had done in the period of 890 to 910 AD. Experts believe that Konark Sun Temple of Odisha is also a unique architecture of Mahoba's Sun Temple.  

    The panchayat style was used especially in the construction of the Sun Temple. Granite stones were used in abundance in it. Construction of the Sun Temple was completed in AD 915.

This Sun Temple of Mahoba was considered part of the incomparable temples of Khajuraho. It has been specially that the beautiful temples of Khajurahas were built by Chandel dynasty kings. 

    The Kings of Chandel had also built Mahoba's Sun Temple. According to experts, the Chandel descendants were King Sun worshipers. So the Sun Temple was constructed in Mahoba. In this ancient temple more than a thousand years, the idols of Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh, Ganesh and Ladies were priceless besides Lord Bhashkar or Sun. 

    There are three gates to enter the temple. A huge Suraz Kund was built just beside the temple for sacrifice. Pratna Pratna is also the statue of Kali Ji in the premises. There is a lavish-divine tank for bathing. This pond was 50 feet long and 50 feet wide. The depth is also 50 feet.  

  There is a ladder to the bath below to the bath. The tradition of organizing the grand-divine fair on the full moon of Kartik month is still going on. Over time, a lot of beauty of this temple has been damaged. Experts believe that this Sun Temple of Mahoba is an incomparable heritage of Bundelkhand. Particularly, Mahoba's Sun Temple is one of the ten selected ancient solar temples in the country.
